Cultures des peaux : histoire naturelle, commerce et ornementation

Le projet post-doctoral analysera les cultures urbaines des « peaux animales » entre Paris et Barcelone, fin XIX-XX^e siècle. Le but est d’étudier le changement des présentations publiques des animaux -taxidermisés- dans les musées d’histoire naturelle par rapport à une culture urbaine plus large -de transformation, circulation et consommation de « peaux animales »- dans le contexte européen. A côté des spécimens et des dioramas exposés dans les musées, des objets de « fourrure, plume et écailles » circulaient dans la ville, sous forme de manteaux, chapeaux et toutes sortes d'articles de luxe. Cette autre « exposition zoologique » urbaine a été jusqu'ici peu explorée. Son analyse pourrait apporter un angle nouveau et fécond à l'histoire urbaine des sciences et à ses cultures d'histoire naturelle.

Animal skin cultures : natural history, trade and ornament

The research project will analyse the « animal skin cultures » between Paris and Barcelona around 1900. The purpose is to understand the change in the presentation of animal displays as part of a larger urban culture -of transformation, circulation et consumption of animal skins- in the European context. Next to taxidermic animal specimens and dioramas exhibited in museums, objects of « fur, feather and scales » circulated throughout the city, in the form of coats, hats and all sorts of luxury items. This other urban « zoological exhibition » has so far hardly been explored. Its analysis could bring a new and fruitful angle to the urban history of science and its cultures of natural history.

Nature civique : science, territoire et ville dans le parc de la Ciutadella de Barcelone au début du XX^e siècle

La recherche menée dans le cadre du doctorat a étudié le Parc de la Ciutadella de Barcelone en tant qu'espace urbain privilégié dans la configuration des conceptions de la nature et d'un certain style de vulgarisation des sciences naturelles dans le public urbain du début du XX^e siècle. Elle a analysé les régimes d'exposition liés à l'histoire naturelle qui se sont déployés afin de les situer dans le contexte politique et social de l'époque. La recherche a porté la signification de trois expositions scientifiques : la sculpture d'un mammouth à l'échelle naturelle qui a été construite dans le parc fin 1907 et qui y est toujours conservée aujourd'hui ; la collection de grands blocs de roche qui a commencé la même année et qui, en trois ans, a atteint plus d'une centaine d'exemplaires ; et la grande exposition de pisciculture et pêche qui a été organisée en 1912 dans le bâtiment Castell dels Tres Dragons, qui était le précédent qui a marqué son lien avec les sciences naturelles, aujourd'hui centenaire, et qui avait été l'ancien Café-Restaurant de l'Exposition Universelle de 1888. L'analyse des trois projets d'exposition visait à comprendre la conception de la nature qui imprégnait ce programme de vulgarisation scientifique. Cette analyse s'est concentrée tant sur les motivations, intérêts et désirs des promoteurs que sur dans les réceptions et les réactions du public.

Civic nature. Science, territory and city in the Barcelona’s Parc de la Ciutadella at the beginning of the 20th century

The research carried out as a doctoral thesis has studied the Barcelona’s Parc de la Ciutadella as a privileged urban space in the configuration of conceptions of nature and a certain style of popularization of natural sciences in the urban public of the early twentieth century. It has analysed the exhibition regimes linked to the natural history that were deployed so as to situate them in the political and social context of the time. The research has focused on the scope and significance of three scientific exhibitions: the sculpture of a mammoth on a natural scale that was built up in the park at the end of 1907 and which today is still preserved there; the collection of large blocks of rock that began in the same year and that in the course of three years reached more than one hundred samples; and the great exhibition of fish farming and fisheries that was organized in 1912 in the building known as Castell dels Tres Dragons, which was the precedent that marked the link with the natural sciences, now centenary, that had been former Café-Restaurant of the Universal Exhibition of 1888. The analysis of the three exhibition projects was aimed at to understand the conception of nature that imbued that program of scientific popularization The analysis of the exhibition projects has been focused so much in the motivations, interests and desires of the promoters as well as in the receptions and reactions that the public of those initiatives had.
