Presentation

Founded in 1958 as part of the VIth section (Economic and Social Sciences) of the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE), the “Center for research in history of science and technology” changed name in 1966 to become the Centre Alexandre-Koyré (UMR 8560). The Centre belongs to the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), the Conseil national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle (MNHN). It gathers over one hundred researchers, university lecturers and professors, post-doctoral researchers and doctoral students.

Their work contributes to the social and cultural history of science and technology, practised in dialogue with philosophical and sociological approaches; it covers a wide field of investigation, in terms of periods – from the Antiquity to the contemporary – , of geographical and cultural areas, of scales of analysis – from the local to the global and their interactions— and of their objects of study: from the Humanities to naturalist knowledge, from the political dimensions of technoscience to the circulation of knowledge, from the visual studies of science to the historical institution of disciplines and their evolution, from the knowledge of the body and life to the history of the historiography of the sciences.

The Centre Alexandre-Koyré is engaged in two “Laboratoires d’Excellence”, the LabEx HASTEC (“History and anthropology of knowledge, technology and belief”) and the LabEx SITES (“Science, innovation and technology in society”).

Within the EHESS, its main institutional home, the Centre manages graduate programmes at the master’s and PhD level, offering training in research through research in the history of science and technology.

The collections of the Centre Alexandre-Koyré, which are among the most important in the field of the history and study of science and technology in France, are grouped together in the Humathèque Condorcet.
